Run The Jewell's - Close your eyes

The reason for why I like this music video is that it has a storyline with it that is represented with the video, this makes it a narrative video which we could do for our music video but a narrative video is hard to remake and create especially in the early stages of making these music videos. The story involved is quite relevant and a big issue in the United States of America and this is white police unfairly treating black citizens and so this video proves a point and stands up for this. It also matches the gender characteristics which within rap music and hip hop is violence. In our music video we could use a similar style such as using the streets to film within and settings similar to this. We could defiantly use the same shots as used within this video to represent our characters. We could use continuity editing in our video to have the same effect as this video had which was a story. I think that it would be hard to use the lighting in this video as it was set out on the streets and by using specialist recording equipment so we would struggle to be able to produce a video to this quality using the equipment we have. there is not one specific shot used in this music video, this is because there are lots of shots used to accommodate the action during the video. The lighting used was natural lighting as they filmed it outside so this would be tough for us as the weather is very inconsistent.

Razorlight - Somewhere else

The reason to why I like this music video is that it follows his trip throughout the day and his trip. This video once again is a narrative video which means that the video has a storyline and in this video we see what he is looking at and how the video relates to the lyrics of being 'Somewhere else'. This video will give us a realistic idea of a music video as it would not be too hard to create as there is 1 main character and he does not do any advance actions such as dancing or fighting like the Run The Jewells music video. The camera shots are quite basic as we are often shown a mid shot of the lean singer which allows us to see his mise en scene and the setting that he is in. It may be hard to use the natural lighting used in this scene as he shown to be outside and so it may be hard for us to do this due to the inconsistent weather that we face. We could use a black and white effect on our video which has a semanctic code that the area is dull, I think this is a good idea as it gives the audience something to think about and this can keep the audience involved and interacted. Continuity editing is used but it is a fast pace which we can also use in our video.

Kasabian - Shoot the runner

The reason to why I like this video is because it is very creative and different to other music videos. The type of video is a performance based video although there is not a crowd they are performing to we still see their instruments being used to play the song. This sort of a music video would be relatively realistic to make as we could use a studio or a larger space such as the school hall where are band or artist could play the song to a crowd. The effect on this video is very creative and I think it works really well but it would be hard for us to emulate this effect, I think that this concept is good and if we can try to make it similar and work we should but it would require lots of professional equipment and a high level of editing skills. We also see that they once again use continuity editing so that it is fast paced like the song which matches well. There are a variety of shots used including lots of different angled shots which I think makes the video look good and it keeps the audience interacted the whole time. Obviously due to the video being animated we could not  use the same lighting but we could use a black background. I also like the way that the band are always standing out due to the neon colours that the animation show as it shows they are the centre of attention and centre of performance.

Evaluation question

1. What did you find most challenging about recreating your chosen video and why?

I found creating a story board challenging as it was hard to recognize each scene, it was also hard to then recreate the scenes on a still shot that we had for the storyboard, to overcome this we had to use a laptop to see each scene and what fully happened so that we could accurately recreate the scene. I also found editing hard to do as we was using software which was new to us and so this took us a long time to adapt and find out how to use this, to overcome this we looked sites such as YouTube to get tutorials and help in order to use the software correctly. We struggled to find an actor that was able to recreate David Bowie due to his different style but we managed to get around it by adjusting the mise en scene of our character.

2.What problems did you face whilst filming?

We struggled to make sure that everyone turned for each part of our video as when we did our storyboards there was people in our group who did not turn up and so this meant that they were confused when it came to filming as they was unaware of each scene and the details of it. A positive that we had for our filming was that we had a good amount of time to film within although we had to re film some of our shots as at times they were not to a good quality. We struggled to film certain scenes accurately which was due to the size of our room as the long shots where difficult to re create as we did not have the room. Our actor struggled with timing with his miming and this led to us having problems with our editing as it was hard to make the scenes fit with the song and when the lyrics were sung.

3.How did you overcome these problems?

To overcome our first problem we used social media to organize when people were in school and so we could send our work to them so that they could look at the work so they had a good idea of what they have to do when they get into school. To re film our scenes we organized a day where our actor would where the same costume as he did last time and so this allowed us to get a accurate video, we also organized a day which suited each person. To overcome our room size issue we used the zoom on the camera so we could zoom out further, we also used chairs to gain height on our actor for high angle shots. To overcome the actors timing issue we ensured our timing was to a good standard so that it appeared in time with the song.

4.Which problems could you not overcome? (were some instruments harder than others to source, could you recreate the look of an artist, could you dress the set, were some shots impossible to emulate?)
A large problem that we had was that we could not get the correct guitar for the video as the real guitar had a strap on it where as ours did not and so this was a negative for our video and also restricted how good our video was as we then struggled with some shots. We also could not restyle our actor to make a accurate representation of David Bowie as we struggled with make up for our actor and also the mise en scene such as clothing. It was also very hard to emulate some of the movements that David Bowie made in his video and so this means that our video was not as accurate as we would have liked.

5.What next steps are you going to take?

I am going to do some research into how to use our editing software effectively so that we do not rush our editing and so that we have a good idea of what to do as otherwise we may not be able to get a good video. I am also going to lots of research into music videos so I have a good idea of what we need to do and how they look and run.
